Su-30MKI to gain improved avionics and weapons

Moscow and New Delhi are discussing the modernization of Su-30MKI multirole fighters being assembled in India under Russian license. Indian media report that the program, dubbed the Super 30, has already been approved by the government’s security committee.

The upgrade will cover the inclusion of new radar, avionics and the integration of an air-launched version of the Brahmos supersonic missile, Brahmos-A.

New Delhi placed the first order for 40 Su-30MKI fighters designed under the requirements of the Indian air force in 1996. In 2000, it signed a deal for assembly of 140 Su-30MKIs at the facilities of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL). This program was complemented by another contract for 40 aircraft signed in 2007.

The Super 30 program started with the intention of the Indian military to use Su-30MKI as a platform for the air-launched Brahmos, manufactured by the Russo-Indian Brahmos Aerospace joint venture. The aircraft will carry one 2,500-kg. (5,512-lb.) missile under its fuselage, requiring some airframe strengthening. The missile is a version of the NPO Mashinostroenia 3M-55 onyx (SS-N-26) antiship missile.

Sukhoi has pushed for wider improvements, although neither it nor Irkut Corp., which produces the aircraft and assembly kits for HAL, has provided any details about this upgrade.

Alexander Baskakov, the joint managing director of Brahmos Aerospace, says the governments of Russia and India have allocated money for the development of the air-launched missile.

This version will be 99% compatible with the existing ship- and land-based missiles that are entering service with the Indian navy and army. The air-launched weapon will have a new booster stage, since it is not canister-launched. Baskakov says the air-launched weapon will be capable of engaging ships as well as fixed land targets.

The Super 30 contract is expected to be finalized this year. Reports suggest that two Sukhoi development aircraft are due to begin trials in India in 2012. Baskakov says the Indian air force plans to field the air-launched Brahmos in 2013.
